Artist's Statement
This body of work - inspired by the coastal rain forests and abandoned buildings slowly fading back into the earth - was created utilising reclaimed and repurposed materials, and is intended to remind the viewer of both the fragility and tenacity of the natural world. Nature will reclaim all that we have built, all that we have razed and pillaged; the only grand design on this earth is the promise that Nature will remain long past our existence. For millennia, humanity has tried tirelessly to imitate and conquer the majesty of Nature, leaving destruction in our wake, but Nature will inevitably outlast any structure, any empire, any faith.
Artist's Biography:
Brianna Winsby is a contemporary Vancouver Island artist specializing in abstract acrylic paintings, portraiture and illustrative works. Inspired by the various textures and patterns found in the landscapes of the Canadian West Coast, Winsby often explores the symmetry between both the micro and macro levels of the natural world. Her work is rarely a direct representation of any landscape, but rather more a visual realisation of a memory, or a small snippet of the palpable emotion that those places evoked. The lake that she spent much of her childhood near, of summer's spent in the water, may simply be shown as the blur of light, colour and undulating depths seen when one's eyes are opened while submerged, gazing upwards from below. In addition to her love of artistic expression, Winsby takes great joy in creating imagery that invites the viewer to explore their own interpretation of her works, and to delve into their own unique experience.
